Cantina's reopen in Cozumel

With authorization coming from the State Health Department, Cozumel and all the municipalities of the state can reopen their shuttered cantinas and bars as well as restaurant/bars that have been closed due to the recent swine flu scare.

Cozumel´s local health department will go about enforcing stricter health procedures (more than laws), especially asking that any persons that handle food use surgical masks as part of the precautionary measures they want to continue.

This will be a great relief to many in Cozumel as many locals ¨need¨ their cantina activities and more in hard times than good times.

Cantinas are the place where most Mexican workers meet their friends and share their problems and their good fortunes over typically good ¨botanas¨ (snacks) that all cantinas serve free of charge along with your ice cold beers.

It’s a big step toward normalization of the Mexican way of life.

Income Tax filings in Mexico

Filing your US taxes from Mexico

By Insidemex.com Original Print Publication: February, 2008

Once again we are approaching every American’s favorite time of year: tax time! Figuring out when and what to file with the IRS can be confusing enough at the best of times, but for those living abroad there are additional complications to take into account. We asked Leonard Purcell, a business consultant with 30 years of experience (including four as a taxpayer service specialist at the US Embassy), to help answer some of our questions and clear up some misconceptions.

Did you know if you are a US citizen living abroad, you have extra time to file your taxes? Tune into the conversation Inside México had with accountants, Adriana Bautista and Lee Purcell in order to help you make more informed and smart decisions regarding your taxes while living abroad. More >>

Inside México: All my income is earned in Mexico – do I need to file taxes here, in the US, or both?

Leonard Purcell: All US citizens need to file a tax return with the IRS every year, regardless of whether you have earned income in the US or not.

IM: I don’t have very much income – should I still file a return? Am I exempt? Is there a cut-off?

LP: A common and dangerous misconception is that expats with a small income earned abroad are exempt from paying taxes and thus do not need to file a return. In truth, Americans may earn income in Mexico up to $82,400 USD annually without being taxed on it: however, in order to claim this exemption they must file a return.

IM: Do I need to file a return if I am a resident alien living outside the US?

LP: Like citizens, anyone with resident alien status in the US needs to file a federal tax return, regardless of where they live or w

here they earn their income.

IM: I earn employment income here in Mexico, and some in the US – what filings do I need to make? What if my only US income is from investments?

LP: All income, whether salaries, self-employment income, dividends, or rental income, needs to be entered into the appropriate sections of your return (form 1040 or the attached schedules). This applies to income earned in the US, Mexico, and anywhere else.

IM: What if I don’t file for several years? Will I be audited?

LP: Your risks of being audited are low. However, if you do not file with the IRS for several years you may be forced to pay back taxes on your foreign income – at the rate levied on US income. In other words, you will not receive the exemption for Americans earning a foreign income of $82,400 USD or less.

IM: Do I have to pay taxes on Social Security income?

LP: There is an exemption if you receive less than $ 27,000 USD (for individuals) or $32,000 USD (for married couples). Above these figures you will taxed at the same rate as in the US.

El Cedral is on Cozumel, 8 miles south of San Miguel. El Cedral is believed to be an important ceremonial site. It is the oldest Maya site on the island (700 AD) and it is the most accessible. Once the hub of Maya life on Cozumel, was the first site found by the Spanish in 1518 and where they celebrated their first mass in Mexico. The Spanish destroyed most of the site and the U. S. Army Corp of Engineers leveled all but one structure completing World War II airfield. All that remains is a small structure with an arch; be sure to look inside to see the faint traces of paint and stucco. Nearby is a green and white cinder block church, decorated inside with crosses shrouded in embroidered lace. In the early 1900s it saw use as a jail. Cedral became the islands first official city in 1847. Today, the area is occupied by a small farm settlement. Cedral hold an agricultural fair each May. The history of this city is explored every year at the Festival of El Cedral. For more than 150 years this event has been held in El Cedral annually in the month of April. The event was first introduced by Casimiro Cardenas, a member of a group of survivors who fled from a mainland village called Saban to El Cedral after the War of the Castes. Legend has it that Cardenas survived a brutal attack that saw the deaths of many villagers all the while holding a wooden cross. This led him to start the annual festival to honor the power of the crucifix. There is a Holy Cross Festival, which makes up part of the El Cedral Festival. The fair includes traditional feasts, rodeos, bullfights, live music and numerous competition. The El Cedral Festival is a village celebration that lasts about five days.

Recycle in Cozumel

Recycling in Cozumel

By Kenith Larsen

After a visit to both the “Eco” office and the Oficina de Servicos Publicos, I learned the following.

What's recyclable in Cozumel?

Styrofoam is not. Glass is recyclable, no matter the color. Any plastic that is stamped with a triangle with a number in it is recyclable. It doesn't matter the number or the color. I pulled out an empty bottle of “1-2-3” cooking oil that had no triangle on it. They said it counted as a hard plastic and I could recycle it too. I pulled out a brown bottle of Microdyne: recyclable. I pulled out a green plastic vitamin bottle: recyclable. Both those bottles had triangles on the bottom. You have to use a magnifying glass to see the one on the Microdyne, but it's there.

How should recyclables be separated and bagged?

Put glass in one clear plastic bag (so the trash collectors can see that it's recyclable and leave it for the recycling truck to pick up) and the plastic in another. They have people to separate the plastic into the various categories. The do ask that all recyclables be clean.

What about used batteries?

The collection receptacle for used batteries is located in Chedraui, between the cashiers and the entrance nearest the waterfront, as you are exiting. It is shaped like a battery. There's a slot for “button” batteries, like the ones used in watches, and another for other batteries. I verified this in person.

What days are recyclables picked up?

Recyclables are picked up the same day as what I call “Big Garbage Day”, the day of the week that you can put out your old Christmas trees, large appliances that no longer work, etc. Apparently, under the new administration the frequency of Big Garbage and recyclables pickups has increased.

Donald Trump builds in Cozumel

The project is back.... for those of you that haven't been involved in the ups and aways of this project it appears to be back again and this time more set than before.  For the most part both a partnership with local government and Federal will clear this project to begin.  It's not going to go away and with the economy it's still going to happen.
